Galaxy

  • Online Dictionary: a large system of stars held together by mutual gravitation and isolated from similar systems by vast regions of space.
  • My Definition: the biggest group of stars.

Irregular Galaxy

  • Online Dictionary:a galaxy with no specific form and a relatively low mass.
  • My definition: is deformed and can be all sorts of shapes and sizes, it has an abundance of gas and dust. .

Spiral Galaxy

  • Online dictionary: a galaxy having a spiral structure.
  • My definition: Is a spiral of stars and dust, has several arms spiraling from center where the dense bulge is located.

Elliptical Galaxy

  • Online Dictionary: a type of galaxy having the shape of a spheroid or ellipsoid, rather than a disk.
  • My definition: Is shaped like an egg (oval in shape), giant ones can have up to a trillion stars and it contains mainly old stars.

Dwarf Galaxy

  • Online Dictionary: A small, dim galaxy, intermediate in size between a regular galaxy and a globular cluster.
  • My definition: Are significantly smaller than other galaxies and may merge with other galaxies.

Milky Way Galaxy

  • Online Dictionary: the spiral galaxy containing our solar system. With the naked eye it is observed as a faint luminous band stretching across the heavens, composed of approximately a trillion stars, most of which are too distant to be seen individually.
  • My definition: spiral galaxy containing 400 billion stars and Earth is located on one of the spiral arms.
