Slide Notes

This deck has been created to commemorate the four hundred and fiftieth year of Galileo Galilei's birth. He was born on 15 February 1564 and died on 8 January 1642.

Galileo championed the idea - now undisputed fact - that the earth revolved around the sun. It was a perspective that the hierarchy of the 17th century Catholic Church found contrary to scripture. He defended his views in a work entitled “Dialogue Of Two World Systems”, which the Church found “vehemently suspect of heresy”. He was forced to recant his views and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

Here then - in nine slides - is the essence of that seminal work, “Dialogue Of Two World Systems”.

Here we are reminded that Galileo was instrumental in the development of the telescope and the fact that observation is central to the scientific enterprise.

Pictured is the Flammarion Engraving which represents a world view that includes a flat earth bounded by an opaque sky, or firmament.

This is a pre-Galilean view of the world based on belief and speculation as opposed to observation and hypothesis.
