GALILEO AS A CHILD

  • Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy on February 15, 1564.
  • He was the oldest of seven children.
  • His father was a wool trader who wanted Galileo to study medicine.
  • Was sent to work in a Jesuit monastery at age 11.
  • He became a monk then in 1581 went to the University of Pisa to study medicine.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Created the telescope
  • Studied astronomy
  • Believed in the heliocentric theory and proved it.
  • Discovered how to regulate clocks.
  • He was a mathematician, astronomer, and musician.

HELIOCENTRIC

  • Galileo believed and supported the heliocentric theory.
  • Galileo could prove that the heliocentric theory was correct unlike the geocentric theory.
  • Galileo told the church that they were wrong and he had to recant his theory or be burned alive.
  • The heliocentric theory is the belief that the sun is the center of the galaxy.
