EARLY LIFE
- March 4,1887- born in Paris, Kentucky
- Parents were former slaves
- Only reached elementary school education
- 1895-Moved to Cleveland,Ohio at a young age to begin his career as a sewing machine repair man.

- Sold hair products and treatments to the African-American community

- 1916- A group of men were stuck in a tunnel under Lake Erie after an explosion (gas mask aided the men's lives)
- Invention took off during World War l (protected soldiers from toxic gases)
