HISTORY

• Garifuna music originated in the 18th century, primarily in Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.

Instrumentation

• Drums are the primary instrument of Garifuna.
• Two types: the Primero and the Segundo
• The Primero: smaller diameter which has a high pitch sound
• The Segundo: a bigger diameter which produces a heavy bass sound

• The Segundo drum maintains a consistent beat and then the Primero is responsible for faster rhythms
• Each rhythm has its own style of dance and song
• Gourd shakers, turtle shells, and knee rattles are also used.
