PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GATEKEEPING

 & THE EFFECTS oF gatekeeping

You have probably met someone in your life that was wearing an ACDC shirt or a Pink Floyd shirt that had never once listened to the artist. You might have thought it was silly for them to wear this shirt, and told them that, but that is an absurd way to react to it. Chances are, they just really liked the shirt.

Gatekeeping is the act of taking it upon yourself to decide whether someone is allowed in a community or allowed to like something or not.

Gatekeeping is outlandish and outdated. This mindset only makes people scared to explore new activities like skateboarding, listen to new artists, or watching new shows, etc. Someone being gatekeeped makes them feel like they aren't allowed to explore new territory. For example, if someone were to find a new artist that they like, and the only song they know might be the band's most popular song, a gatekeeper will say they don't actually like that band at all and are not a real fan without knowing every song from the group. This competitive way of thinking is negative & helps no one. If you gatekeep someone it does not make you cooler, or helpful, it just makes you seem like a not very nice person.

Eradicating the competitive mindset of gatekeeping and the culture around it would help everyone by creating a more accepting community overall.
