  • Received important subsidies from the UUSR and the FRG
  • Exposed to the Western World
  • Best high education institutes within the Eastern block

  • Subsidies were a tool to keep prices down.
  • Weak econonomy
  • Well educated individuals usually escaped the GDR
  • Substantial war reparations were payed to the USSR

  • Emigration as a political statement
  • During 1989 at least 100 k had escaped the country
  • A movement inspired by the fall of Hungary and Czech regimes

THE LAST STAGE

  • The power of demonstrations
  • September 4th 1989
  • By October, half million citizens took the streets
  • Nor the army or the police dare to repress the people
  • The government lost it's political power.
