GENDER INEQUALITY

WHAT IS GENDER INEQUALITY?

GENDER INEQUALITY

  • Gender inequality is legal, social or a cultural situation in which sex or gender determine the rights between women and men, which are reflected in their unequal access to or enjoyment of rights, as well as the assumption of stereotyped social and cultural roles.

MEN’S PARTICIPATION IN

MEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • Men are generally the root of the problem
  • Men have more advantages than women do
  • Men are paid $418,000 more than the average woman in a four-decade long career
  • Men are accepted into college easier

MEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • Most men are actually feminists
  • Men belong in the fight for gender equality as much as women do
  • Men are often stereotyped as aggressive or most likely to commit a crime
  • Some men are accused falsely of crimes
  • Many men face the backlash of women’s bitterness on the subject

MEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • Modern society also expects men to be the money maker. Though it's often that both men and women make money, the expectation that men should be making more money still exists.
  • The World Economic Forum says, “Men assume policy leads to positive impact...For men, it was the potential and the effort that gave them a sense of well-being.”

WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • A Harvard article about Girl Power writes, “Empowering girls don’t identify with a passive-feminine sex role, yet maintain “female” skills like social networking.”
  • Women are also encouraged and allowed to do some of the things men do. For example, when girls channel their aggression into competition, or play (generally men-based) sports.
  • Simone de Beauvoir wrote, “Sooner or later [women] will arrive at complete economic and social equality, which will bring about an inner metamorphosis.”

WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • A surprising amount of men feel as though gender equality is not a considerable deal, and woman should continue to be treated lesser than them.
  • For women, gender issues have a full impact, affecting women and their lifestyles constantly. Gender identity shows women what hurts and helps us, knowing or unknowingly.

WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • Mary Lou Quinlan became the CEO of an unnamed company, "My passion for winning business got me to a CEO seat where I could place more women in senior positions. That didn't go unnoticed. One creative guy muttered, 'Are you trying to turn this into a woman's agency?’”
  • “For example, women are often expected to be accommodating and emotional, while men are typically expected to be confident or aggressive,” The Washington Post writes.

WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION

  • The media also advertises these harmful stereotypes. The Common Sense Media report states that more than 150 articles, interviews, and books find that gender stereotypes in movies and on TV shows are widespread and very influential. The media and entertainment is teaching children what society expects of male and female.

OTHER GENDERS’ PARTICIPATION IN

OTHER GENDERS’ PARTICIPATION

  • While men and women are often the main focus of gender inequality, the 112 genders and 70 sexualities face much more discrimination than many ever will.
  • A 2015 Fusion Millennial poll of 18-34-year-old people found that the majority see gender as a spectrum, rather than only men and women.
  • a 2017 Harris Poll found that 12% identify as transgender or gender non-conforming.

OTHER GENDERS’ PARTICIPATION

  • A significant issue in society is that people tend to use the words "sex" and "gender" interchangeably. While the words are connected, they do not mean the same thing. Generally, we assign a baby's sex as either male or female based on the baby's anatomy. As soon as sex is assigned, most people assume the child's gender identity.

OTHER GENDERS’ PARTICIPATION

  • Nearly 90% of transgender kids and teens had experienced verbal harassment at school. Two-thirds of that group also stated that they felt unsafe at school, and with more than half experiencing physical harassment and assault. The National Center for Transgender and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force reported in 2013 that 78% of gender-diverse kids are harassed, 35% physically assaulted, 12% sexually assaulted, and 6% expelled

OTHER GENDERS’ PARTICIPATION

  • The Gender Spectrum states, "Experts who work with youth and gender issues tell us the two most common [gender] myths are these: First, gender is binary, offering only two options; second, gender and sex are the same thing."
  • In an area of the hypothalamus, which is a part of the brain known to be connected to sexuality, is more abundant in males than females, and smaller in male-to-female transgender minds.
