GENDER IN FILM

REPRESENTATION OF MALES IN FILM

  • Play active roles which drive the plot and narrative in film
  • Physically and mentally strong
  • Outnumber females in cast
  • Allowed to look and hit on we on without consequences
  • Their character traits are usually dominant over females

REPRESENTATION OF FEMALES IN FILM

  • Usually play passive roles
  • Are placed in situations to objectify females for the male viewing pleasure
  • The main caretakers of children at home
  • Socially constructed to be dependent on the male for protection and to be taken care of

GENDER AIMS IN FILM

  • To understand how film represents and constructs gender roles both male and females
  • To understand basic feminist theories, including how men watch women "the gaze"
  • To be able to apply gender theories to different genres of film

CLASSICAL FILMS IN GENERAL

  • During the run time in classical films, there is clearly defined roles
  • They enforce gender roles, men do manly things like work, women do girl things like clean
  • For example, In films if there is a family, typically in these films, the father will go off to work to provide for their family while the females will take care of the children

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE ACTIONS

  • Within films it is noticeably different of the way female and males are portrayed
  • For example, in a typical action film, the male will be the protecter of the female while the female is rather powerless and is only in the scenes for the purpose of advancing the plot while the male is the star in the film
