THE FOUNDING OF GM

  • GM was founded on September 16, 1908 by William Durant
  • Their first car was the Buick Model F
  • The car retailed atas little as $1,250
  • They continued production until 1910 and made 1200 units

HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION

  • General Motors practiced horizontal integration
  • They acquired Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Oakland and Elmore in their first two years

VERTICAL INTEGRATION

  • A stock market scare in1907 put small buisnesses in distress
  • GM was able to buy small car builders, as well as car part and accesory manufacturers

MARKETING

  • GM's new brand in 1915, Chevrolet, was made to rival Ford
  • It was marketed to the "everyman" consumer with low prices
  • They wouldn't have had so much success today if it wasn't for Chevy

ASSEMBLY LINE

  • GM copied Ford in the use of the assembly line
  • They were able to produce cars quickly and efficiently
