PROBLEM STATED. Jenny withdrew all of her from her savings account at the bank. After giving 10% percent to her sister, she spent 1/3 of what was left on a book and then gave the remaining $72.00 to a local animal shelter. How much money did Jenny's sister get?

UNDERSTAND

  • She gave 10% of the money to her sister
  • Then spent 1/3 of her remaining 90% on a book
  • The left over 60% = 72
  • How much money did she give to her sister?

PLAN. We will just follow these steps, and set up a proportion to find x, the amount of money jenny gave to her sister

SOLVE

  • 100% - 10% = 90%
  • 1/3 of 90% = cost of book (30%)
  • 90% - 30% = 60%
  • 60% = $72.00
  • 72/60 = x/10

SOLVE 2

  • 72/60 = x/10
  • Next divide 72 by 6 as that is our proportion
  • This gives us x as 12
  • This means x = 12
  • So jenny gave 12 dollars to her sister

CHECK

  • 10% * 6 =60%
  • 10% = $12, 60% = (12*6) = $72
  • 60%/2= 30% so $72/2= $36
  • $72 + $36 + $12=$120
  • So Jenny's sister got $12.
