Down Syndrome

CHROMOSOME

  • Autosomal: it has an extra chromosome in pair #21
  • It is caused by an error in cell division.
  • It is when an extra chromosome leaves the egg and sperm cell by accident.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

Upward slanting eyes (also called lazy eyes), often with a skin fold that comes out from the upper eye lid and covers the inner corner of the eye.

Small head, ears, mouth, and nose. They have a flattened facial profile.

Wide, short hands with short fingers. A deep groove between the first and second toes.

POPULATION

Population: Most older mothers that are pregnant are more likely to have a baby with Down Syndrome than younger mothers.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

In the 1930's the average life span for
a person with Down Syndrome was ~25 years now it is ~60 years.

CHALLENGES

It is harder for them to move because their bodies are smaller than an average body.

You can do screening tests this can show a chance that a baby has Down Syndrome. If the test result is positive your baby is more likely to have Down Syndrome.

You can not do drugs to cure Down Syndrome but you can do drugs that boost the chemical messenger.

FUN FACTS

  • Animals can get Down Syndrome.
  • There are more than 400,000 people living in the USA with Down Syndrome.
  • Roughly 25% of families in the U.S. are affected with Down Syndrome

This is Kenny Cridge he is the oldest person living with Down Syndrome in the U.S. He had a twin sister named Dorothy. Dorothy did not have Down Syndrome. Dorothy has passed away and he just celebrated their 77th birthday

This is Madison she has Down Syndrome and Leukemia.
