PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Genetic Engineering

Westley Kasper and Lynette

Discovery

  • Rosalind Franklin
  • Years of research on DNA
  • X-ray Diffraction(Photo 51)
  • Critical evidence to the discovery of DNA structure
  • Watson and Crick used Franklin's work
Watson and Crick used Franklin's work four years after she passed away (1958) so she wasn't eligible for the Nobel prize. However, she would have still been overlooked simply for being a woman.

Genetically Modified Organisms

  • Genes have been artificially changed
  • Sheep, cow, and goat milk
  • Stronger, able to resist disease,
  • Provide more healthful or more efficiently-produced food
  • Target disease-causing bacteria such E. coli or Salmonella

GEnetic Engineering with diseases

  • Replace genes with disorders with healthy genes
  • Replace diseased genes in their children
  • Useful for parents with hereditary diseases

GENERATION of DESIGNED BABIES

  • 1997 St. Barnabas Hospital designed babies
  • Penitentially pass down the modified genes
  • First case of human germline modification
  • Changed immediate children's genes
  • Also of any children they may have

Gattacan Mind set

  • Designing humans may have
  • unplanned consequences
  • such as mutations, both physically and mentally
  •  humans would be  “playing God”
  • Will such interventions in nature would change the human gene pool?
Although we have experimented on monkeys, who are close to the human genetic structure, we have no idea how designing humans may go.
