CHROMOSOME

A thread like structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells.

DNA

It is the carrier of genetic information and it is an self replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes

GENE

A unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic off the offspring.

DOMINANT TRAIT

A trait that will appear in the offspring if one of the parents contributes it.

RECESSIVE TRAIT

A trait that must be contributed by both parents in order to appear in offspring.

CARRIER

A person or other organism that has inherited a recessive allele for a genetic trait or mutation but usually does not display that trait or show symptoms of the disease.

HEREDITY

The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another,

ALLELE

One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome

HETEROZYGOUS

Having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes

HOMOZYGOUS

Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes

SEX CELLS

A reproductive cell having the haploid number of chromosomes, especially a mature sperm or egg capable of fusing with a gamete of the opposite sex to produce a zygote.

PHENOTYPE

The set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction b of its genotype with the environment

GENOTYPE

The genetic constitution of an individual organism.

PUNNET SQUARE

A square diagram that is used to predict the genotypes of a particular cross or breeding experiment

ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION

A type of reproduction which does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION

The production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different sexes
