GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES

NILE RIVER

  • The longest river in the world
  • It has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile
  • The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert
  • It ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea

SAHARA DESERT

  • The world's hottest desert
  • The 3rd largest in the world
  • Covers most of North Africa
  • Some of the sand dunes can reach 590 feet in height

LAKE VICTORIA

  • Largest lake in Africa
  • World's largest tropical lake
  • It gets almost all of its water from precipitation
  • 2nd largest fresh water lake in the world

CANARY ISLANDS

  • It's a Spanish archipelago
  • Holds the world's 3rd largest volcano Mount Tiede
  • They get over 12 million visitors per year
  • Consists of 7 large and several small islands

GREAT RIFT VALLEY

  • Approximately 3,700 miles long
  • Runs from northern Syria to central Mozambique
  • Today, it most often referred to as the valley of the East African Rift
  • Has two branches, the Western Rift Valley and the Eastern Rift Valley

HORN OF AFRICA

  • Peninsula off of east Africa
  • Extends hundreds of kilometers into the Arabian Sea
  • It is inhabited by roughly 100 million people
  • It consists chiefly of mountains

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

  • The highest peak is Toubkal
  • It stretches across the northwestern part of Africa extending about 1,600 mi
  • Has been home to a number of plant and animal species unique in Africa
  • Goes through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia

CONGO RIVER

  • World's deepest river at 720 feet
  • It is the 3rd largest river in the world
  • It gets its name from the ancient Kingdom of Kongo
  • The river and its tributaries flow through the Congo rainforest
