Geography and Food is a presentation where the main purpose is to develop an understanding about the Hispanic/Latino culture (different traditions and customs per country, music, food, etc.). The purpose of this presentation is for students to acquire a broad knowledge of Hispanic and Latino culture and learn what are some of the differences and similarities between Hispanics and Latinos.

  • What is a Hispanic?
  • What is a 'Latino'?
  • Do they speak the same language?
Hispanics:
1. In general, Hispanics speak Spanish.
2. They have a Hispanic heritage or were born in a Hispanic country.
3. Hispanics in Latin America are Latinos too.

Latinos:
1. Latinos speak Spanish, English, Portuguese and other languages.
2. Latinos in the U.S. have Hispanic or Latino heritage .
3. Not all Latinos (e.g. Brazil, Haiti) are Hispanics.

Hispanic & latino Food

Hispanic and Latinos eat different type of foods. As you know, in Mexico and Guatemala people eat 'tortillas' with meet, fish, beans and other ingredients. Countries in the Caribbean (e.g. Puerto Rico, Cuba, the coast of Central America and most countries in South America), the main meal is rice, beans, meat or fish and plantains (not 'tortillas'). Also, there are some national dishes from Spain like 'paella' (rice or noodles and meat or seafood) and 'tortilla' (Spanish omelette).
