SOUTH EASTERN NATIVE AMERICAN TRIBES

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

  • Humid and fertile agricultural region
  • Animals, plants, and crops of the area provided food, clothing, and shelter.
  • Houses, shelters, and homes depended on the materials available to them.
  • Perfect for growing maize, beans, squash, and tobacco.
  • River valleys, mountains, and swamps are in the South East.

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY CONTINUED

  • Nomadic hurders, fishers, and farmers. (Because of the weather)
  • Mountains, rivers, and forests in the North.
  • Grasses and swamps in the South including the Everglades.
  • Hot in the summer and mild in the winter.

PRE- COLUMBIAN LIFESTYLE

  • Primarily farmers, but they depended on hunting and fishing.
  • Lived in various types of houses with thatched roofs.
  • Falcons and jaguars are often in their art.
  • Had ties with Mexico

PRE- COLUMBIAN TRIBES

  • Chickasaws,Choctaws, Creeks, Delawares, Cherokees, Tuscaroras,
  • Mississippians, Natchez, Seminoles.

POST- COLUMBIAN LIFESTYLE

  • Cultivation of tobacco and cotton became more common
  • Many people in the tribes had died of diseases brought by Europeans
  • Europeans forced the natives to allow them to take over their land

POST- COLUMBIAN LIFESTYLE

  • The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and
  • Seminole became the Five Civilized Tribes.
  • Adopted many of the colonists customs.
  • The Five Civilized tribes all spoke a variant of the Muskogean language
