isthmus

  • A narrow strip of land, with water on both sides, that connects to larger land masses.
  • Example: the isthmus of Panama connects Costa Rica and South America and is between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

plain

  • Elevated flat land.
  • Example: the Great Plains in North America.

delta

  • A point of land extending into the sea; it is usually smaller than a peninsula.
  • Example: the Nile Delta, where the Nile River expands and drains into the Mediterranean Sea.

cape

  • The triangular-shaped land found at the mouth of some large rivers.
  • Example: the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

peninsula

  • A mass of land almost entirely surrounded by water. It is usually connected to the mainland by a narrow neck.
  • Example: Florida is a peninsula.

Valley

  • An elongated lowland between mountains, hills, or other uplands.
  • Example: Sacramento is bordered on one side by the Sierra Nevada mountain range and on the other side by the Coastal range.

canyon

  • A deep narrow depression in the earth's surface, often having a river running through it.
  • Example: the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

plateau

  • A broad expanse of generally high and flat land, also called a tableland.
  • Example: the Tibetan Plateau located in central Asia.

strait

  • A narrow passage of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
  • Example: The Strait of Gibraltar which connects the Atlantic Ocean on its west with the Mediterranean Sea on its east.

Archipelago

  • Either a group of islands or a body of water that has many islands in it.
  • Example: the Bahamas in North America.
