PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights By Lauryn Mick

The Aurora Borealis is a natural light display that can be seen in high altitudes.

Cause

  • Charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth’s atmosphere.
  • That causes the electrons to move to a high-energy state.
  • Those electrons release a photon or light when they drop back to a lower state of energy.

Location: Can be seen in latitudes 65 to 72 degrees from late November to March.
Factors: Cloudless sky, clear sky, strong solar wind, little artificial light

History: In 1619 Galileo Galilei saw the lights and gave the name aurora borealis after the Roman goddess of morning. He thought the lights were caused by sunlight reflecting from the atmosphere, but was wrong

Catastropism or Uniformitarianism?

  • Uniformitarianism- it's predictable and causes no damage.

Constructive or Destructive?
Constructive because it creates natural light.
