KUNLUN MOUNTAINS

  • Source of China's great rivers the Huang He and through Chang Jiang
  • Located in west China
  • It's extends 1,000 miles east-west between the Kashmir-China border
  • Birth place of Taoism
  • First holy mountain in China

HUANG HE RIVER

  • Empties into the Yellow Sea
  • The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam is being built on it
  • Gets it's from the yellow silt it carries
  • The course has been changed at least 5 times
  • Known as the mother of the Chinese nation

GOBI DESERT

  • A prime area for finding dinosaur fossils
  • Sand dunes are mainly in the east
  • It becomes more fertile towards the west
  • The soil holds stone weapons and tools of nomads from over 100,000 years ago
  • It hosted parts of the Silk Road

PLATEAU OF TIBET

  • It's the highest and biggest plateau on Earth
  • The elevation exceeds 5,000 meters
  • Stands 3 miles above sea level
  • Before China invaded Tibet was its own country
  • The illiteracy rate was 45% in 2005

TAKLIMAKAN DESERT

  • Known as the "desert of death"
  • One of the largest shifting sand deserts in the world
  • Some dunes get to 800-1,650 feet high
  • Has no permanent population
  • Over 4,000 years old mummies were discovered there
