HIS BEGINNINGS

  • George Gershwin was born into a Russian/Jewish immigrant family as a kid in Brooklyn, NY, USA
  • As a kid George loved theatre and appeared on stage many times as extra.
  • George played his older brother’s piano with his family all the time.
  • His parents changed their last names from Gershvin to Gershwin to sound more American.
  • Later in life George Gershwin composed many songs with his brother Ira.

HIS SCHOOLING

  • George Gershwin dropped out of school at the age of 15 to pursue his music career.
  • George did not find his education as important as playing and learning music
  • George started musical school at the age of 11 and absolutely loved it.

INFLUENCERS TO HIS MUSIC

  • One influencer George Gershwin had was Henry Cowell, he liked the way his music was modern.
  • Another influence to his music was Wallingford Riegger, he liked the way his music was modern as well.
  • George also enjoyed Irving Berlin’s music as a child for the sound of jazz and classical together.

HIS DEATH

  • George Gershwin was 38 years old when he died.
  • George died on July 11, 1937.
  • He died young due to a brain tumor.
  • His grave is in Hollywood California to symbolize how much time he spent their making shows and music.

  • George Gershwin made most of his money by recording piano rolls.
  • George Gershwin also made money by making broadway musicals and operas.

  • George Gershwin first learned how to play the piano and is mostly known for that.
  • He is also known for playing the saxophone and other jazz instruments.
  • He liked putting completely different topics of music with different instruments and smashing them together. (Such as jazz and classical.)

FACTS, PT.2

  • George Gershwin stayed in Paris for a short amount of time and wrote a song titled “An American in Paris” while there.
  • Gershwin enjoyed playing tennis in his free time with his friends.
  • Gershwin also loved painting and it ended up becoming his hobby and he started to paint more and more and absolutely loved it.
