EARLY CAREER

FIRST WORKS

In 1932 he picked up a passion for writing when he was in Paris. His first works were of course not that good compared to what he’ll write later on. His friends would purposely read his writings and get a good laugh at how bad they deemed it was.

BREAKTHROUGH

His first famous work was called “Burmese Days.” The book was about the dark side of the British rule over India. His book was an attack on the colonial system. This novel introduced one of his writing characteristics which is a lonely protagonist trapped in an oppressive system who cannot escape.

CONTINUED DISTASTE

Orwell was involved in the Spanish Civil War. He nearly escaped his end when a sniper shot his throat. The bullet passed through and he lived. After this his distaste for politics grew, which resulted in him writing more novels.

GREATEST WORK

Orwell’s greatest work is called “1984”.
Here’s a quick summary.
Winston Smith lives in a dystopian society. Everything is monitored. There’s no such thing as free speech, thought, or will. The ruling party’s leader who’s in charge is known as “Big Brother.” The party controls everything, the past and present. Even thinking about being free is illegal and considered the worst crime to commit. Winston is not fond of the oppression that prohibits everything. He states his thoughts in a diary and looks fondly over a party member names O’Brien who in Winston’s eyes is a man who is about to overthrow the current party. He meets others who have the same motives as him but he later finds out that they might not have the same intentions as him, and might lose the person who is the closet to him.

SIGNIFICANCE

George Orwell, expressed his political ideas through his novels. Such as his distaste to facism, totalitarianism, dictatorship, communism, and propaganda.
The idea of being completely stripped of free will, with no good ending. Is what he brought into the world of literature.
The idea of being in a society controlled by those in power.
