George Washington was born to Mary and Augustine Washington on February 22nd, 1732 in Westmorland County, Virginia. He was the oldest son. In 1743 after his father died, he went to live with his half brother Lawrence, who died in 1752. In 1759, he married Martha Daindrige Custis, and he had no children.

In 1775, the Revolutionary War began in Lexington, Massachusetts. Washington was elected commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. That meant 14,000 people were under his command. In December 1776, he told his troops to retreat across the Delaware River, an example of him being a great general. He was a Founding Father and after the war, he was elected President of the United States.

George Washington was a good General and helped us win the Revolutionary War and declare independence from King George III and the British. If he hadn't done that the world may not be as it is now. We could have lost the war and not be free. We may have not had a president. We may still be loyal to King George III and have to pay those expensive taxes.
