PRESENTATION OUTLINE
GEORGIA'S FATHERS
- King George II
- James Edward OGLETHORPE!
WHY!
- Many European nations had been competing to get the most land
- King George wanted a place for a colony to rest from Spain
- James Ogelthorpe wanted to settle in Georgia and start a colony where people who had to pay for a debt could come and work it off
- If you couldn't pay off a debt you would get arrested and put in jail.
People of Georgia
When the first White settlers came to Georgia there were already Native American living in that area. Until the African slave trade became popular they forced the Native Americans into work. There was no religion. Most of the white settlers came for escape of religion. Other settlers were people who were paying off a debt.
The economy in Georgia was mostly farmers growing cash crops such as indigo, cotton, and tobacco. Slaves were outlawed in Georgia, but were still being used. Other settlers made their living from their family stores.
Politics and Government was landowners (free people or white settlers) voting among themselves to find representatives and a governor. The governor always got the last word.
Climate was nice and calm in the winters and hot and humid in the summers, and you will never die from coldness. Along the coast are swamps and forests.
I'm glad Georgia is on my mind.
