FOUNDING

  • Founded by James Oglethorpe in the year 1732.
  • It was meant for debtors.
  • It was also meant as a buffer to protect the Carolina's.
  • Fun Fact: It was named after King George II.

GEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Georgia consisted of:
  • Hilly Coastal Plains
  • Lots of forests
  • Plateaus

POLITICAL STRUCTURE

  • The first governor of Georgia was James Oglethorpe, the founder.
  • William Stephens became the president of the colony, but Oglethorpe was the military leader.
  • There was a board of trustees, until 1752 when it became a royal colony and an assembly was elected by the people.

Economic STRUCTURE

  • Georgia was supported mostly by agriculture
  • Several important crops included rice, indigo, tobacco, cotton, corn, grain, and fruit
  • They also exported lumber
  • With the introduction of slavery in 1749, so came the use of larger-scale plantations.

SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF COLONIAL GEORGIA

  • At the top were the wealthy land owners
  • Next was the middle class, included the workers, such as blacksmiths and other craftsmen
  • Then comes the farmers
  • And below the farmers were the enslaved servants and farmhands
