GERARDUS MERCATOR

  • Born march 5,1512
  • His family moved from Germany to Flanders shortly before her was born.
  • Educated in hertogenbosch(Netherlands) recieving training in Christian do train, dialect, and Latin.
  • In 1530 he entered the catholic university of leaven to study humanities and philosophy
  • Died December 2, 1594

ACOMPLISHMENTS

  • Gerardus was a Flemish cartographer whose important innovation was a map, known as the Mercator projection
  • Gave an accurate ratio of longitude and latitude
  • Also introduced the term atlas

IMPACTS

  • Wrote the codes for maps we use today
  • His map converts the spherical world into a 2 demential map
  • Known as the prince of modern geographers in his time.
