WHO WAS GERONIMO?

  • Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe

BIRTH

  • Geronimo was born on June 16, 1829
  • He was born in Arizpe, Sonora, Mexico

DEATH

  • Geronimo died on February, 1909 because of Pneumonia exacerbated by horse riding accident
  • He died in Fort Sill, Oklahoma

YOUNG LIFE

  • He was raised by his parents according to the Apache traditions
  • After the death of his father, he was to live with the Tchihende

HIS FAMILY

  • He married a women named Alope when he was 17. She was his first of nine wives
  • They had three children.

HATRED FOR THE MEXICANS

  • On March 5, 1858 400 Mexican soldiers raided the camps that Geronimo and his family lived on
  • During this raid the Mexican killed Geronimo’s wife, children, and his mother

QUOTE

  • “I have killed many Mexicans; I do not know how many, for frequently I did not count them. Some of them were not worth counting. It has been a long time since then, but still I have no love for the Mexicans. With me they were always treacherous and malicious.”

GERONIMO’S CAMPAIGN

  • On May 17, 1885 Geronimo and a bunch of others fled the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona after a show of force against officer Britton Davis.

CAUSE OF DEATH

  • In February 1909, Geronimo was thrown from his horse while riding home, and had to lie in the cold all night before a friend found him extremely ill.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Geronimo’s skull was allegedly stolen
  • The US Military used the code name Geronimo for the raid that killed Al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden
