MRK 1:1-8

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in [a]the Prophets:

“Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You.”
3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’ ”

4 John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance [b]for the remission of sins. 5 Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before you, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’ " John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I,

whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Start at the Beginning

of the gospel
Mark - probably a compliation of Peter's preaching messages....

Mark begins with the statement

the beginning of the gospel of Jesus

Here is a good place to start

(Illus. Each evangelist has a different starting point. Mark begins with the work of John the Baptist, Matthew with the ancestry and birth of the Messiah, Luke with the birth of the Baptist, and John with the preincarnate Word)

The good news starts here......with the one who was tasked with getting us ready to meet Jesus

His job was to share the good news of Jesus.....

Start with one of the gospels - read a chapoter or two a day as you move towards Easter Sunday......

Read the Prophets

Isaiah in particular......here, but Micah 5:1-3, Hosea 11:1 and others point to the coming of the Messiah in some way

Here are the words in Isaiah that come before the quote......

Comfort, comfort my people,
says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double for all her sins.

“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him....(Isaiah says for our God) a highway for our God.[b]

Then what follows....
Every valley shall be raised up,
every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

this is a quote from Isaiah 40:3, and the verses before that relates to God's desire to comfort Israel because it has suffered enough for its sinful choices......

and on the other side

Comfort, comfort my people says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. (Mark has Him)

Every valley shall be raised up every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Lord has spoken............and then switch back to Mark 1:4.......

And John came.....a gap of about 700 years that to the Lord was but a moment......hmmm

A messenger is coming....sent by the Lord....

preparing the way, removing debris out of the road, filling in the potholes, re-engineering the curves into straightaways....

so it would be as easy as possible to get to Jesus

A voice calling from the desert, for Israel a place of judgment, bondage, death, hopelessness and fear....from that location saying one who will deliver you from all of this is on his way....

Repent

Camotan, Guatemala

vs 4

I had the opportunity to go with a team to Camotan Guatemala one time, which led to trips that still take place....when you got up in the morning and looked out from the balcony this is what you saw first.........

Repent....

change your mind in such a way it changes your behavior....

do a 180....

turn around and go in the opposite direction

Repentance comes in response to hearing a message about the gospel

usually comes with the invitation to

confess - say out loud that you see sin the same way God sees it....

your sins and experience the forgiveness of sins

when God "let's it go"

Get Baptized

take the next step
Baptize - to be dipped in something or under somehow, immersed,

a ceremonial washing that Gentiles converted to Judaism went through when they were

So a familiar ritual.....but this one was a baptism of repentance

confessing your sins

accepting the forgiveness of
God

Avoid Judgement

vs. 6

John's entire staging was a great backdrop for Israel

a messenger sent by God for a specific purpose

symbolic of a rescue from God's judgment

with a booming voice - one crying out!!

in the middle of nowhere

his clothes - modeled after Elijah's dress and ministry 2 Kings 1:8

his menu -

such an impressive delivery people heard about him from the boonies and came to him.....

to get ready for God's next big move.....

Remove head

cut off legs, peel, and pickle, salt, or in soup
Locusts were prepared for consumption by detaching their wings with a knife and peeling them as one peels the scales off fish. From rabbinic sources we learn that locusts were boiled or pickled in salt and vinegar to preserve them. The Mishnah also describes the preparation of a “locust soup”:

Because we are having lunch after church today, in case someone was looking for a new recipe.....

very common food at the time.....

Receive Christ

He is Coming....

More powerful than I

not even worthy to assume the position of a servant before Him

Receive Him with open arms

for He is coming in person

and in power

to immerse, put us under the power of the Holy Spirit

That is who we are getting ready to worship in the form of our risen Savior.....

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior.
