GETTING TO KNOW AN EXPLORER

GIOVANNI DA VERRAZZANO

  • 1524 is the year he made his discovery .
  • He sailed to north america in seach of a sea route to the pacific but he didn't find the route.
  • Verrazzano discovered what is called today New York Harbor.

JACQUES CATIER.

  • In 1534 he made his discovery.
  • He discovered the river St. Lawrence.He followed it inward until he reached a large island dominated by a hill he named ithe island mont royal which later became known as Montreal.
  • The route he toke was reached a gulf off the eastern coast of Canada.

SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN

  • He made his discovery in 1608
  • He claim his region he called Quebec. It eventually became the base of France's colonial empire in North America, known as New France
  • The route he took was that he sailed up the St.Lawrence.

JACQUES MARQUETTE AND LOUIS JOLIET

  • In 1673 the both explored
  • They both explored the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi River .

SIEUR DE LA SALLE

  • In 1683 he explored
  • He explored the lower Mississippi . He claimed the entire river valley for France.
  • He named it Louisiana in honor of the French king , Louis XIV.

HERNY HUDSON

  • In the early 17th century
  • Hudson was looking for a western route to Asia
  • He explored a river which eventually was named for him, and laid thereby the foundation for

  • In 1487
  • He sailed around the southern tip of Africa in the hope of finding a trade route to India.
