The Ghana Empire rose around the AD 400s and fell in the 1200s.

It was known as the “crossroads of the trade.” It was called this because it was a place where all the trade routes came together. Most traders had to pass through Ghana to get to other locations. To gain money, everyone that came into rough Ghana had to pay a tax; this made Ghana very rich. Although they did not own gold mines, they controlled people who did. Ghana did have salt mines which people from Western Africa would pay for at almost any price.

Rulers of Ghana would have assistance from advisers or a council. Ghana was split into provinces ruled by lesser kings and were ruled by them.
