THE GILDED AGE

GILDED AGE DEFINITION

  • The gilded age was from 1870 to about the 1900s
  • It was an era of rapid economic expansion
  • This was the case in spefically the North and West
  • Wages in America were much higher then those in Europe
  • This increase in wages attracted many immigrants to America

CHILD LABOR

  • This photo displays a boy that does no havw the simplest education
  • He is 12 year old Furman Owens
  • He can not read, he does not know his ABC's
  • He has been in the mills since he was 8

WOMENS SUFFRAGE

  • This photo is of women marching to gain equal rights for women
  • This photo was taken in 1913 New York City and features the youngest woman suffragist

URBANIZATION

  • This photo depicts a dead guy caused by a murder
  • A side effect of urbanization is an increase in crime
  • The more people you have packed in a small place, the more crime you have

SEGREGATION

  • This is a small negro school house in the 1920's
  • It is very rundown and does not have the supplies and resources the white kids have.
  • It is very unfair to the black kids to have such a poor education

POPULISM

  • This is a farmer shown working on his fields
  • Populism is the belief that regular people have the power
  • A farmer is an example of a regular person

IMMIGRATION

  • This a Chinese man that came to America
  • He probably came here for a new opportunity or religious freedom
