POLITICAL MACHINES

  • They controlled the city government every way they could
  • They were often a city boss, a ward boss, or a precinct captain
  • They were all about cash, you pay and they promise victory

MACHINE ORGANIZATION

ROLL OF THE POLITICAL BOSS

  • Usually mayor or city councilman
  • Controls jobs, licenses, and the court system
  • Provided blueprints for campaigns

ROLL OF IMMIGRANTS

  • Were the workers to the concept
  • Provide full support exchanged for favors

WHAT IS GRAFT?

  • The illegal use of political influence for personal gain
  • This made the bosses:
  • Richer
  • Help own them elections
  • Financed there political operations

BOSS TWEED

  • Worked for Tammany hall
  • Convicted on 120 counts of fraud & extortion
  • Sentenced to 12 years but escaped & left to Spain
