Giorgio Vasari

Born July 30th 1511, in Arezzo; died June 27th 1574, in Florence.

Biography

  • referred to as the “father of art history”; architect and painter
  • Lucia Signorelli = Vasari's first teacher
  • Florentine workshop of Andrea del Sarto and in the sculpture workshop of Baccio Bandinelli

Biography cont.

  • often faulted for his regional loyalties and prejudices
  • aid of assistants: large # of painters who worked for him contributed significantly to his style

Significant Patrons

  • Duke of Florence: Alessandro de’ Medici (architecture and portraits)
  • Camaldoli (frescos and altarpiece)
  • Cosimo Bartoli (remodelling of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence)

Contributions

  • considered the 1st Art Historian
  • largely due to Vasari that we have such a wealth of information about the artists of the Renaissance
