ENDANGERED/PROTECTED/OR THRIVING?

  • There is at least 6 different types of species of giraffes that are in
  • Existence. Not any of them are actually endangered. In 1999 the total
  • Of giraffes in Africa exceeded 140,000. Today there is 80,000.
  • They aren't considered endangered now but they could be in the future.

ENVIRONMENT/HABITAT

  • Their environment is limited to mainly
  • Savannah's, Sahel, and dry open woodlands.
  • They prefer habitats with a lot of trees and
  • A lot of areas to run.

WHAT A GIRAFFE EATS

  • Giraffes are major browsers. They mainly eat the leaves off of trees
  • And buds Off of trees and shrubs. They also eat herbs, vines, etc.
  • They prefer flowers and fruit during certain seasons. They eat by browsing
  • And eating off of high trees. It's hard for them to bend down and eat because
  • Of their necks being so long so they prefer eating from high places.

OMIVORE/CARNIVORE/HERBIVORE

  • Giraffes are herbivores. Their diets
  • Strictly consists of plants.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

  • The main environmental issue is deforestation. If the trees
  • Are cut down that takes away their food source. It also takes away shade
  • And shelter. The competition between humans and land makes a big factor for resources.
  • This causes too much loss of habitat and contributes to the slight population decrease
  • Causing them to be endangered.

FUN FACT

  • Giraffes have hard inner surface areas in their mouth
  • That let's them eat thorns and other hard plants.

FUN FACT

  • Giraffes spread their front and back legs
  • In order to drink water. Their necks are shorter
  • Than their long legs.

FUN FACT

  • Giraffes use their markings to camouflage themselves
  • Among trees. Just like human fingerprints, their markings are never the same on
  • Each giraffe they are all different.
