GMO FOOD TRENDS

JADE ROBINSON

Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) are foods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering.

Corn used for food has been genetically modified to be resistant to various herbicides and to express a protein from Bacillus thuringiensis that kills certain insects.[

Experts say 60% to 70% of processed foods on U.S. grocery shelves have genetically modified ingredients. The most common genetically modified foods are soybeans, maize, cotton, and rapeseed oil.

Benefits of GMO's:

Statics of 2013

There are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale.

Very few fresh fruits and vegetables in your local grocery store are genetically modified. Potatoes are one of the genetically engineered vegetables available in the United States, but only a small percentage of potatoes for sale to consumers have been modified.
