challenges

Obstacles: Buy-in getting students to want to goal set/see importance of goal setting, making time to make goal setting meaningful without taking away from instructional time.
Consistency
Authentic goals - students would just write down a number/goal to have one.
Time restraints - add goal setting without compromising instructional time

positive forces

Positive forces:
Capacity matrices- set up made it easy for data tracking,
technology,
Administrative support
Campus initiative: many other teachers doing similar goals to collaborate with.

Starting point

THERE WERE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HOW TO SET GOALS. WHAT DO WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHEN SETTING A GOAL.

Implemented capacity matrices, created class goals to be compared to other classes.

Students created goals based on pretest scores

Began student goal setting with first unit-chemistry.

Cumulative Quizzes utilized on Thursdays to enhance retention

Cumulative quizzing allowed for us to increase retention for students.
This gave them something to look at consistently to monitor progress in achieving their goals.

students monitored progress by learning target on capacity matrix

Compared objectives covered on matrix in INB to make sure all objectives were covered.
Students recorded progress on matrix to see how they were doing on each LT.

Students recorded goals in INB on Capacity Matrix

Goals were recorded and checked on in the same place as they were tracking progress throughout the unit- their capacity matrix in their INB.

Students Progress tracked to monitor goal attainability

Students would set goals each unit and track progress on their goals.
Students used quizzes and checked on their goals to reflect each week.
Example-
April 1st - "I have checked on my goals one time and achieved that goal."
April 8th- "I have done my goal both times now and wish I would have started this sooner."

Students compared progress to other classes

Part of goal setting was to compare class averages to motivate students to help eachother learn and succeed.

Next step 2015/16:

Create environment of student driven detailed goal setting
Next Steps: Continue goal setting, Implement procedures to make it a more student driven process, help students to use goal setting skills outside of the classroom.

More student driven & More consistency.
