Today we can fly across the country in a few hours.
At the time of the Gold Rush in 1849, It was a long and very hard trip.

There were two main Ways to travel to California: by wagon train or by sea.

The California-Oregon Trail was 3,000 miles and took 3 to 7 months.

Most of the Forty-niners that were from the midwest or the east traveled on this trail.

One of the main reasons for people dying along the way was cholera, a bacteria found in water. cholera claimed thousands of lives.

They had to cross rivers. rapid currents pulled people and animals under. Lots people and animals drowned.

A wagon train can cover about 15 to 20 miles a day .

Around the Cape Horn, the Distance was 15,000 miles And Took 4 to 8 months.

Those who traveled this route did not enjoy traveling by boat. costs ranged from one hundred to one thousand dollars. People had small rooms for up to eight months.

The dangerous part of this route was the giant waves, freezing temperatures and strong of wind.

This was probably the safest trip with thousands of men getting safely to California.

The Panama Shortcut was 7,000 miles by sea. It took 2 to 3 months.

The Panama short cut made it quicker getting to California by cutting off 8,000 miles and a few months.

the trip started off near the Caribbean Coast. 49ers sailed on a canoe, and then on mules or horses through a jungle.

Many died from diseases like Malaria, yellow fever and cholera. After going through the jungle, miners arrived to take a boat ride to California.
