Gold silver and Boomtowns.

  • Transportation was vital to the survival of mining communities.
  • Gold,silver, & other metals had little value unless they reached factories,ports,and markets.
  • Wagons and stagecoaches could not move people and goods fast enough,but railroads could.

THE GOVERNMENT.

  • To help with high construction cost, the governtment gave railroad companies large subsidies financial aid and land grants.
  • Government land grants included land for the tacks plus strips of land, 20 to 80 miles.
  • Railraod companies sold this land to raise money to pay for construction.

NEW FARMING METHODS

  • Sodbusters are farmers that developed new farming methods and tools.
  • Sodbusters practiced dry farming.
  • To cut through the tough layers of sod- the steel plow.

HOMESTEAD.

  • In 1862 Congress passed the Homestead Act to encourage settlement on the Great Plains.
  • This law gave up to 160 acres of land to any head of a family who paid a $10 filing fee and lived on the land for five years.
