WHAT IS IT?

  • An STD caused by neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • It can grow easily in warm, moist places
  • It is a very common disease
  • More than 700,000 people get it every year in the U.S.
  • It can infect both men and women

SYMPTOMS IN MEN

  • Sometimes no symptoms are present
  • White, yellow or green discharge from the penis
  • Painful and swollen testicles
  • Burning sensation when urinating

SYMPTOMS FOR WOMEN

  • Usually not noticable
  • Painful/burning while peeing
  • Increased vaginal discharge or bleeding during period

COMPLICATIONS

  • Formation of scar tissue that blocks fallopian tubes
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Infertility
  • Long term abdominal problems

TREATMENT

  • There is a medication that can be taken to make it go away
  • Must take all medication
  • Has to be perscribed by a doctor
  • Best to get treated as soon as possible

HOW IT AFFECTS PREGNANT PEOPLE

  • It can be given to the child during delivery
  • Ectopic pregnancy can occur (outside the womb)
