WHAT IS IT?

  • A sexually transmitted disease that occurs in men and women
  • A bacterial infection that can cause infertility

HOW COMMON IS IT?

  • More than 3 million causes in the US per year
  • Common in people ages 15-24

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

  • Can be transmitted from vaginal, anal, or oral sex
  • Can be passed from mother child in childbirth
  • Breastfeeding

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Painful urination
  • Abnormal discharge
  • Testicle pain or swelling
  • Pain in belly or pelvis for women
  • Often no symptoms at all

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

  • Need to see doctor and receive diagnosis
  • Notify all sexual partners
  • Don't participate in sexual activities

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

  • Doctor swabbes the infected area
  • Identify bacteria in laberatory
  • Doctor notify the patient

COMPLICATIONS

  • Infertility in men and women
  • Infection that spreads to joints and other areas of the body
  • Increased risk of HIV/AIDS
  • Children of infected have a chance of becoming blind

TREATMENT

  • Adults are treated with antibiotics
  • Babies receive medication through eyes to prevent infection

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT?

  • Abstain from intercourse oral, and anal sex
  • If you choose to have sexual contact with a partner, use a latex condom

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT GOES UN-TREATED?

  • Can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in woman
  • Infection spreads to uterus or Fallopian tubes
  • PID can cause infertility
  • Causes scars on the inside of the urethra for males, making urination difficult and painful
