PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Gothic Textura Quadrata

or 'black letter gothic'

characteristics

  • Primarily used for sumptuous liturgical books
  • developed in the 13th century
  • highly legible Minuscule
  • angular shapes suggest a 'woven' appearance

Untitled Slide

  • strong sense of verticality, heavy shading, biting (overlapping) of facing bows
  • heavy lines give it 'blackness' and the tapestry-like quality gives it the name 'Textura'
  • bases of letters have neatly constructed angular feet

Untitled Slide

  • Extension strokes on the ascenders and descenders
  • Diamond shape to letters, especially tops and bottoms of vertical lines
  • Minims — 'm' 'n' 'i' 'u'
  • distinguished word spacing

capital letters

signal the start of a new sentence, paragraph, or page

Untitled Slide

  • Capital letters took on the form of roman square capitals or uncial letters, with extension of the round and vertical strokes
  • often highly decorated and presented in a boxed form
  • could incorporate floral or animal imagery

ligatures

letters are fused, woven together in 'biting curves'

punctuation

use of various forms of punctus

Untitled Slide

  • gothic prescisus vel sine pedibus is different because the bases of the letters are cut off straight, parallel to the marking line
  • they do not have the angular feet of gothic textura quadrata - hence the name 'sine pedibus' which means 'without feet'
