GOUT

  • Type of arthritis
  • Sometimes known as "Disease of Kings"
  • Was thought to be caused by a king like diet
  • The king diet theory was found to be false

CAUSES

  • Over accumulation of uric acid
  • Urate crystals build up in joints
  • Acid build up is due to a person's diet
  • Shellfish, red meats, alcohol, and sugary things
  • Kidneys can't remove this acid well enough

EFFECTS ON AFFLICTED

  • Anyone is susceptible to getting gout
  • Effects 3 million Americans
  • Rarely found in children
  • Can be hereditary
  • Linked to obesity, diabetes, and hypertension

  • Seriously effects the person's quality of life
  • Treatment participation is very necessary
  • People with gout have a risk of developing chronic arthritis
  • Lifestyle adjustments must be made to control gout
  • Attacks are painful, discomfort can linger for long periods of time

SYMPTOMS

  • Intense joint pain
  • Lingering discomfort
  • Inflammation/redness
  • Hands, feet, ankles, knees are common spots for gout

TREATMENT

  • Acute attacks battled with medicines
  • Anti inflammatory drugs are most commonly used
  • They give quick pain relief
  • Tolerated well by most people

  • Drugs to prevent uric acid build up can also be taken
  • The arthritis drug Anakinra can be used for severe gout
  • Diet changes are a big part of managing this disease

  • Gout is a painful disease that can effect anyone
  • There is no true cure for it
  • It negatively effects the lives of those with it greatly
  • Medications and life changes are the only way to control it
