HOW THE COLONIES WHERE GOVERNED

  • Most of the colonies had a charter, which gives them the freedom to govern themselves.
  • The charters were given to them by many different people.
  • When King James II came to the throne, he wanted more control over the colonies.
  • He believed that they were way to independent.
  • He revoked the charters of Massachusetts, Plymouth, New Hampshire, and Maine.

THE ROYAL COLONIES ( AND NOT ROYAL COLONIES )

  • Some colonies surrendered their charters to the crown.
  • If they did, they would be considered royal colonies.
  • If remained under a charter then they would be called proprietary colonies.

PURITANS AND THE GOVERNMENT

  • Puritans and colonist were affected by the fear of their charters and freedom being taken.
  • Puritans were worried about Governor Andros taking away their charter and freedom of religion.

NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Colonist and Indians did not have a good relationship.
  • This is because of the colonist greed for land and power.
  • There was conflict often between the two sides.

PUNISHMENTS AND LAWS

  • A letter would be branded into a criminals right hand.
  • The second time into the left hand.
  • The third time brought death.

IMPORTANT PEOPLE

  • Sir Edmund Andros was sent to the colonies to revoke the charters.
  • King James II believed the colonies were to independent, so he sent Andros to take back the charters.
  • Queen Elizabeth I gave the colonies their first charters.
