Monarchy

• "Mono" - meaning one
• Ruled by a king
• Hereditary - passed down to sons
• King expected loyalty from all citizens

Oligarchy

• "Oligos" - meaning few
• Small group of leaders
• Rulers could be the artistocracy (wealthy)
• Rulers could be experienced warriors
• Rulers could be strong government leaders

Tyranny

• Tyrant seized power and ruled with no legal right
• Grew out of Oligarchies
• Gained support from the less wealthy
• Responded to demands of the middle class

Democracy

• "Demos" - meaning people
• "Kratos" - meaning power
• Earliest democracy in Athens
• "People" had say in government
• Free adult male land owners
