The country of Lebanon and part of the country of Syria today,
were Ancient Phoenicia long ago. These Phoenicians were known as "the purple people" because of the extraordinary clothing they made with the purple color. The houses there, were vast fortresses because of war that would happen between them and other nations. The men would gather wood from the cedar trees and make big ships for crossing the Mediterranean to trade with Spain, Italy and many other countries.

The nations would want the precious fabrics of purple and would give the Phoenicians the precious metals, wood, glass, and ivory. The many objects that the Phoenicians got were useful for there art of making vases and other such beautiful creations. With these metals, and other materials the Phoenicians created and carved gods to worship. The god, Baal, was used for new born babies and animal sacrifices. They would place the "new-born" in the hands of the god, which were hot because of the fire, and the new born would burn. This was only some of what the "purple people" did in this ancient civilization.
