BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP

OMG GRADE 12

SOME TIPS ON NAVIGATING YOUR GRADUATING YEAR
This slide deck is part of the post-secondary transition plan for our senior students. Grade 12 students are invited to the assembly typically held in the third week of school.

PREPARE TO GRADUATE

  • 30 credits
  • 40 hours
  • Literacy course/test
  • Make it count!
Credit checks in November are done annually to catch gaps in compulsory credit accumulation and to catch clerical errors that can happen. Know your credits! Get your volunteer hours in!

TAKE CARE OF THE DETAILS

SHSM'S, CERTIFICATES, SUBSTITUTIONS
Not sure of the requirements? Check out the Student Services website or come in for an appointment.

Getting your French, Business or Art certificate? Be sure to see your department head in the spring.

Substitutions can be done for compulsory credits but you must fill out a sheet and have it signed by a parent, then return it to the guidance office. Very simple!

SPORT SHSM

  • 5 major credits + co-op
  • 2 Phys.Ed or Science each year
  • Additional business, social science
  • Certifications, experiences
SHSM students also need to complete CLA's in English and Math. Ask your teacher for details.

Thinking about adding a SHSM to your profile? Our main sign up time is September. Even a partial SHSM can be fun and help clarify your career goals.

Can't fit co-op? Consider night school co-op.

DON'T GIVE UP

ULTIMATELY, THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
The 'ostrich' theory of planning your life (sticking your head in the sand and hoping for the best) is not a strategy you should employ. Let's get on this folks!

STAY IN TOUCH

  • Make an appointment
  • Check bulletin boards
  • Listen to announcements

SO

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE?

ITS HARD TO CHOOSE

THE RIGHT PROGRAM TAKES SOME WORK
You are more likely to be happy with your choice if you have done your homework.

WHO ARE YOU

CONSIDER YOUR STRENGTHS, PREFERENCES

ASK YOUR FAMILY

SOMETIMES, THEY SEE YOUR TALENTS DIFFERENTLY
Teach 'school' to your dolls? We're you the tinkerer in the garage? Always running some kind of lemonade stand?

These can be clues to the real you.

Go ahead, ask them what you were like as a kid!

VOLUNTEER

WHERE'S THE $

TRY DUAL CREDITS

  • Wide variety
  • 2+2 credits
  • Different enviro
Last year, one student applied to college in 5 minutes, free of charge because he was only applying to his dual credit program. Canadore considers these students 'internal' and processes them much differently.

DO SOME PLANNING

  • Consider local options
  • Compare programs, living costs
  • Go visit
  • Attend CIP, UIP
Your local or northern schools are more likely to have a spot for you because they receive fewer applications. Make sure you include one of these northern schools especially if you are applying to a competitive program.

DON'T PROCRASTINATE!

IT'S NOT REALLY THAT BAD

STILL NO FOCUS?

CONSIDER A GAP YEAR OR VICTORY LAP
Just don't plan on the same old stuff. Take a risk by doing co-op or a dual credit. If you are truly going to learn something about yourself, you've got to do something different!

The 34 credit cap may affect you if you don't have an IEP. The victory lap is turning into a half lap for most. Still, it works. You can spend the balance of the year working and saving your money. You'll need it!

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS

  • 6 U or M credits at Gr 12
  • Check prerequisites!
  • Minimum grade vs cut-off grade
  • Additional requirements
You should visit electronic info this month. It's easy and it saves you a lot of time from searching other sites. If you need to change your courses, now is the time to find out!

COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Very different from U
  • Very specific
  • Some are more competitive!
  • Check pre-requisites and cut-offs
Some colleges will require that you go there and write a test on a specific day in the spring. It also costs money, plus travel costs. Be sure you consider your willingness to do that if you apply. If you don't go, they toss your application.

Health care programs are famous for this!

APPRENTICESHIP REQUIREMENTS

  • Can begin in high school
  • Significant need
  • Highly skilled= highly paid
  • Math/Science
Apprenticeships still include classroom learning, they just do it differently. Shorter blocks, while you are employed, usually.

Programs are so varied, your probably best served by making an appointment. Our board coordinator for apprenticeships can also help.

Although its not easy to get an apprenticeship, there are tips to getting one.

JOIN THE FORCES

SUBSIDIZED EDUCATION, TRAVEL, TRAINING
Remember Zach? He's currently attending Carleton U in engineering and being paid to go.

Did I mention they paid his tuition too?

Ultimately, these folks are soldiers and it is a serious consideration. To explore your options, sign up for the talk.

YOU HAVE TIME

THE BIG DECISIONS DON'T HAPPEN UNTIL SPRING
Right now, just figure out what you want to apply to.

MONEY MATTERS

  • Get an account
  • Get a job
  • Save your money!
  • Apply for OSAP
  • Make a budget
Budget planners are available on every college or university website.

You didn't get this age overnight. Your parents have probably given this a lot of thought. Talk to them!

There is support financially for everyone. You can do this!

  • Tuition 5-12k
  • Residence/Meals 10-15k
  • Books/supplies/fees 2-5k

COLLEGE COSTS

  • Books/supplies 2-5k

APPRENTICESHIP COSTS

  • Many grants and subsidies
  • $400
  • Tools can be expensive
  • 2-4 years work/school
  • Paid employment

MARKS ARE IMPORTANT

KNOW WHAT YOU'RE AIMING FOR
Electronic info!

Minimum marks in NO WAY reflect the actual cut-offs. Ask the reps what the real deal is.

BEWARE

THERE'S COMPETITION FOR YOUR SPOT
You may be the only flamingo at Chippewa, but you'd be surprised at the number of students who are also vying for your spot.

Competition can get worse in second year. Universities often accept high numbers in first year and then reduce the spots for second year, knowing there will be casualties.

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • StudentAwards, ScholarshipsCanada
  • Student Services website
  • Looking for more than marks
  • Sometimes quirky, specific
  • More for university than college
Top students should make an appointment to discuss their options. Everyone should apply to something.

College works differently. Usually, you apply in the fall, once you are a student.

CREATE A PROFILE

MAKE A LIST OF YOUR AWARDS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, EXPERIENCE
These profiles can be used many times for scholarships and awards.

Need a letter of reference? We write great ones but we need time to be brilliant on your behalf! Two weeks is ideal.

YOU JUMPED IN, NOW WHAT

WHAT IF

IT DOESN'T WORK OUT

Untitled Slide

CHANGING COURSE

  • Mental gear shift
  • Can be expensive
  • It's not a race...
  • Pride, assumptions, expectations
It's actually more like 65% drop, change or fail all or part of their first year program, so it's a good idea to anticipate that this may happen, even with the best of planning.

Remember, if Plan A doesn't work out, there are always 25 more letters.

Life goes on; you will too. The people you care about want you to be happy and find the right program too. Just don't spend all of your inheritance figuring it out!
