PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GRADE 2

AN OVERVIEW OF MATHEMATICS COMMON CORE LEARNING STANDARDS

2.OA.A.1

  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
  • Unknowns can be present in any position
  • Example 1: 5 + 7 = 10 + 2
  • Example 2: 6 + __ = 10 + 4

2.OA.B.2

  • Add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies
  • Example 1: Counting on (14!....15,16,17,18)
  • Example 2: Using the relationship between addition and subtraction ( 8 + 4= 12 is related to 12 – 8= 4)
  • By EOY students must know all sums of 2 one-digit numbers by memory

2.OA.C.3, 2.OA.C.4

  • Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.
  • Example 1: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
  • Ex. 2: Draw 2 groups of 3 stars. Then write an addition sentence to match.

2.NBT.A.1-4

  • Understand place value of 3-digit numbers. Count within 1000 and skip count by 5s, 10s, 100s
  • Write numbers to 1000 using base 10 numbers, number names and expanded form
  • Example 1: 726 = 7 hundreds, 2 tens, 6 ones
  • Example 2: 439 = 400 + 30 + 9
  • Example 3: 457 > 455 (student must explain why based on place value knowledge)

2.NBT.B.5-8

  • Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations.
  • Add or subtract up to 4 two-digit numbers. + or - within 1000 (concrete models/place value strategies)
  • Example 1: 67 + 25 or 63 - 35 (using multiple strategies)
  • Example 2: 354 + 287 or 213 - 124 (using multiple strategies)
  • Example 3: What is 100 more than 291? What is 10 more than 764?

2.NBT.B.9

  • Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work
  • Students will explain using pictures, number and words
  • Students apply their knowledge of place value and properties to explain their work.
