GREAT SCHISM

MAiN DISAGREEDMENT:

  • 1054 Pope Leo IX and Patrian Michael discommunicated
  • The major/primary conflict was who gets papal authority

GREAT SCHISM SPLIT

  • After their disagreement Europe split lands. The Easter orthodox and the Roman Catholic were formed.

ROMAN CATHOLIC

  • Patriarch had authority over bishops
  • Authority over kings/ emperor
  • Priest may not marry
  • Divorce not promitted

ORTHODOX

  • Patriarch/bishops are the head of the church
  • Emperor had authority over patriarch/bishops
  • Priest may be married
  • Divorce is allowed

LEO IX & PTRIARCH MICHEAL

  • They had different worships and believes witch also caused the great schism.
  • But they're religion did have things in common, for example had the same bible and the same god

ROMAN CATHOLIC/ORTHODOX TODAY

SUMMERY:

  • The great schism was a great impact in Europe in 1054. It all happened because Leo IX and Michael had disagreement about their religion and who had authority. They separated their lands and the Roman created the Catholic Church while Constantinople created the orthodox.
