The basics
The Greek had many different ways of writing numbers.
Some Greeks used the first letter of the number for the number. To make it easier they used special symbols to represent numbers like 50,500, and 5000.

The Greek numeration is not still used today because the number system was used around 500 BC to the third century.

Greek numeration do not depend on place value I know because it didn't say there was a special number or place value.
