PENINSULA

  • A piece of land surrounded by water on only three sides.

COLONY

  • A settlement in a new territory that keeps close ties to its homeland.

POLIS

  • A Greek city-state, a tiny independent country.

AGORA

  • An open area below the acropolis that was a market and a place where people met to debate issues.

TYRANT

  • An absolute ruler.

OLIGARCHY

  • A form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dormant class or clique.

DEMOCRACY

  • Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people.

HELOT

  • A serf or slave.

ACROPOLIS

  • A fortified area on a hill.

SATRAP

  • A subordinate ruler, often a despotic one.

SATRAPIES

  • The province or jurisdiction of a satrap.
